What is the History of World Humanitarian Day?
World Humanitarian Day honors and commemorates Sérgio Vieira de Mello and 21 of his UN colleagues who were killed in a bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad. On August 19th 2003 this headquarters was attacked and 22 individuals lost their lives as a result. The Sérgio Vieira de Mello Foundation alongside de Mello’s family campaigned for years to have the day commemorated in his and his colleagues’ honor.
Finally, in 2009, after years of careful work, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the resolution to mark the day as National Humanitarian Day. This was well received and the family of de Mello was particularly grateful for the honor which they had bestowed. This day also honors the many humanitarian workers who have lost their lives over the years serving humanitarian causes. Additionally, all humanitarian workers from every corner of the world are honored on this day for their bravery, strength and dedication to humanitarian work.

Values Jammer in the Spotlight
Nicole Sdao
Who are you?
Someone who’s trying to make empathy a priority
What are your core values?
Responsibility, empathy, and integrity
Why did you join the ValuesJam community?
The ValuesJam community always for open discussion on values which helps people appreciate and understand the impact that has on us as individuals and society
How are you using your ValuesJam card decks?
To be the “ice-breaker” activity for meetings.
Fave rock n roll moment of magic from a ValuesJam session?
Still the discussion of the value of “Safety.” I had never thought of “safety” in that way before and I still reflect on that discussion
How could more WELFARE improve the world?
Welfare, when given as a hand-up not a hand-out, enables people to start with a stable base. This empowers individuals to have the confidence in themselves to take responsibility and the potential to thrive!
What drew you to adopt the ValuesJam card RESPONSIBILITY?
As the flight attendant’s say “put on your own oxygen mask first, then help others who need assistance.” The first thing we can do to help our world is take responsibility for ourselves – it starts with simple stuff like throwing away your own trash. Once an individual is responsible for himself/herself/themselves it becomes imperative that they help others to attain that sense of freedom that being responsible for oneself offers.
