The journey began in 2020 when Lisa Birtles accepted an invitation to join me in creating a card game to inspire values-led conversations and, in August 2021, the first ValuesJam card decks arrived. Sixty Founder Members (you know who you are) joined the band and others have joined over the past five years, as team members in the ValuesJam studios, joining ValuesJam Guest Sessions and ValuesJam Deepdive conversation, wearing ValuesJam merchandise, taking part in the ValuesJam survey for World Values Day each year etc. Whether you have joined in as a band member, crew member, partner, fan, venue or booking agent or other way, you have contributed to the ValuesJam purpose to create harmony all over the world by inspiring values led conversations. Some bands begin with a splash, and disappear just as quickly. Others start quietly before gathering momentum. Others take a different direction with a whole new audience. Today, I’m delighted to share the next chapter in the ValuesJam story.
ValuesJam JUNIOR has now joined us on stage. It’s a small game with a big purpose.
Created for children aged 3–11, ValuesJam JUNIOR helps young people discover the language of values through play, conversation and imagination. Each card introduces a beautifully illustrated values character, inviting children to explore what those values look like in everyday life and encouraging conversations that can continue long after the cards have been put away.
Parents, carers and educators will be able to provide hours and hours of education and entertainment, returning time and time again. And this means the card decks represent exceptional value.
As many of you know, in the ValuesJam studios, we believe that when people find their own values, they also find their own voice. ValuesJam JUNIOR simply introduces that conversation earlier, helping children build confidence, empathy, curiosity and kindness while creating stronger connections with family members, teachers/carers and friends. We believe it is never too early to start!

ValuesJam cofounder Alan Williams has helped to cocreate an initiative that is sure to resonate with International Youth Day. The Voices of Tomorrow Youth Creative Futures Project Home | Voices Of Tomorrow gives youth a voice by inviting young people under 25 to share their vision of the future through the creative arts. The final selection of one hundred artworks featured paintings and drawings as well as poetry, collages, video and 3D modelling that are now displayed in an immersive virtual exhibition experience on THE 4TH DIMENSION at 4D Voices of Tomorrow. We are now seeking partners for a Voices of Tomorrow 2 project and perhaps the ValuesJam card decks could be used as a creative prompt to identify possible future themes.

Gill Mason
Who are you?
I’m Gill Mason, training director for Kids Planet Day nurseries – early years expert with a lifelong passion for learning and giving children the strongest possible start in life. I’m also a devoted Springsteen fan—drawn to his storytelling, grit, and heart—and a proud champion of vocational education. I believe in learning by doing, in heart over hierarchy , and in creating environments where everyone can thrive and belong.
What are your core values?
Care, equity, authenticity, and social justice . In early years work, these aren’t abstract concepts—they show up in every interaction, every learning moment. I believe in meeting people where they are, honouring every voice, and helping others find their rhythm and potential—just like The Boss would say, “you can’t start a fire without a spark.”
Why did you join the ValuesJam community?
I joined ValuesJam because I saw it as a way to bring together everything I care about: human connection, shared values, learning through dialogue, and a bit of joy along the way. Whether I’m in a nursery, a training session, or a policy conversation, I’ve always believed values are what carry us forward. ValuesJam offered a fun, soulful, and powerful way to make those conversations more meaningful—and more human.
How are you using your ValuesJam card decks?
I use them across all the spaces I work in—from early years settings to team days in the Academy With colleagues, trainees, or even parents, the cards create these beautiful openings for honesty, humour, and heart. They’re brilliant in vocational education too—so many young people light up when asked what really matters to them.
Fave rock n roll moment of magic from a ValuesJam session?
There was one moment that still gives me goosebumps. A group of early years educators had just pulled cards, and one of them—who’d been really quiet—shared how the value of belonging reminded her of why she first chose this career. She got emotional, we all did. It turned the session into something unforgettable. It reminded us why we do this work. It was pure magic
How could better WELFARE improve the world?
Better welfare is the bedrock of a fair society. When families have access to good early years support, when young people can pursue vocational paths with respect and opportunity, when no one is left behind—that’s when society starts to shine. Welfare, to me, is about creating the conditions for people to live with dignity and purpose. It’s not just policy—it’s compassion in action.
