Values Jammer in the Spotlight-
Glenn Lineberry
Who are you?
I am a second-career educator serving as principal in a rural secondary school in the mountains of eastern Arizona, and leading the Arizona Student Opportunity Collaborative (AzSOC), a grassroots effort to mitigate the impact of a worsening shortage of teachers. In a nutshell, we pay highly qualified teachers already working in rural schools to teach an additional class, and make that class available to rural students across the state at no cost to the students, their families, or their schools.
What are your core values?
My core values are to learn something every day, to contribute positively to any activity in which I’m involved, and to do so in ways that are authentic to my beliefs and responsibilities.
What drew you to the world of EDUCATION?
My family are from a remote and very rural part of the Ozarks, and I was raised to believe that a concentrated effort to educate oneself is the answer to most any problem. At every point I have found myself inadequately prepared – beginning university, graduate school, on the job – the solution has been to dig in and read myself out of the hole. I owe this entirely to parents, grandparents, and teachers who taught and lived this core belief. When I retired from business, it was my goal to teach and model that belief to rural students who can leverage self-directed learning to expand their opportunities, whether those goals are to leave their rural homes or to stay in their communities.
Why did you join the ValuesJam community?
I saw Alan Williams work remotely with some of my student leaders during the pandemic, and observed those kids conducting and analyzing a values survey in our school. Alan’s work with our students showed me the value of identifying and proselytizing fundamental values in an organization. This was a revelation for one raised with the injunction to do one’s good in private (Matthew 6:5) and I am learning how explicitly but humbly to center my professional actions in my personal values
How are you using your ValuesJam card decks?
Just beginning but we’ve started playing a round at the beginning of our leadership team meetings, and are working on an idea to teach the process to students working remotely from around the state.
Fave rock n roll moment of magic from a ValuesJam session?
The value of the well-designed and properly timed follow-up question. Everyone knows Waters and Gilmour’s “We don’t need no education”, but too many miss/forget “We don’t need no thought control/ No dark sarcasm in the classroom”. Adequately answering the top question on the card seems like such an accomplishment, only to realize that the real work starts at the second or third level. That’s life, isn’t it? The big answers are easy, it’s the details where one finds the devil.
How could better EDUCATION improve the world?
This has both quantitative and qualitative answers. More people need access to more educational opportunities the world over. Access by chance, too often limited by economics or social status, is no way to decide who gets the opportunity fully to develop their talents. It’s unfair to the individual and profoundly wastes potential assets. By the same token, an educational system rooted in the needs of the factory age is no way to prepare people for a future characterized by jobs that haven’t yet been invented and challenges we don’t yet understand. Inadequately and unevenly educating young people is no way to build a path to the sunlit uplands. In the rural context, this additionally involves helping students to meld their intellectual and vocational goals with the qualities and strengths of their rural upbringings.
