Independence Day
The Fourth of July—also known as Independence Day or July 4th—has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution. On July 2nd, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From 1776 to the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence, with festivities ranging from fireworks, parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues. The Fourth of July 2023 is on Tuesday, July 4, 2023.

Values Jammer in the Spotlight
Kimberly Wiefling
Who are you?
I’m “Scrappy Kimberly”, a force of nature (the GOOD kind!), the cofounder of Silicon Valley Alliances, founder of Wiefling Consulting, and the author of Scrappy Project Management. My work enables managers to become leaders and groups of people to become true teams, who can achieve TOGETHER what would be impossible to achieve alone. I have helped companies from startups to the Global 1000 to fix problems that have been proven to damage or destroy organizations. My passion is to help overcome the global pandemic of dysfunctional organizations and disengaged employees. My approach to transformational change is something I call workSHOCK therapy. Our “Learning Labs” are highly engaging experiential programs that support real and meaningful positive change.
What are your core values?
HOPE! Without hope, nothing else matters.
INTEGRITY
AUTHENTICITY
COMMUNITY
WELLBEING
ABUNDANCE
Why did you join the ValuesJam community?
Shared values are vital to effective teamwork and healthy organizations. I strongly believe that it’s crucial that teams take the time to share their individual values, and then co-create shared team values. And these values must be “operationalized” so that it is very clear what behaviors and language are aligned with those values and which are not. Furthermore, teams must agree IN ADVANCE on how they will deal with situations where they violate these values, and how they will get back on track.
How are you using your ValuesJam card decks?
We use various exercises to support achieving this, including the ValuesJam card decks. People select their top personal values, then they compare them with the values of other teams members. Then together they create their shared team values. Finally they “operationalize” these values so they know exactly what’s they expect of each other, and how to hold each other accountable and get back on track when values are violated.

How could more Leadership improve the world?
The most common causes of failure in global teams are completely predictable and almost entirely avoidable. One MIT Sloan research project found that over 80% of teams failed to achieve their goals, identified these top causes as:
Failure to build trust
Ineffective communication, problem-solving & decision-making approaches
Lack of clear, shared goals
Lack of alignment between individual and team goals
Look at this list! This is ENTIRELY a failure of LEADERSHIP!
Look, 80% failure rate for predictable and avoidable causes is simply unacceptable. And the Gallup research on Employee Engagement has shown for decades that there is a global pandemic of disengaged, or marginally engaged, employees.
More effective leadership will dramatically increase the ability of individuals, teams and organizations to achieve their goals in healthy and effective ways.
If you want to drive a car, you need to take a test and get a license. But currently it’s possible for someone who doesn’t know anything about the decades of research about the practices of effective leadership to manage a team, founder of a startup, or an executive in a company.
I live in Silicon Valley, California. We call failure “prototypes” here! But when we do fail, I want it to be for new and more exciting reasons, not for completely predictable and avoidable causes.
