We celebrate Nelson Mandela International Day every year to shine light on the legacy of a man who changed the 20th century and helped shape the 21st. This is a moment for all to renew with the values that inspired Nelson Mandela. Absolute determination. A deep commitment to justice, human rights and fundamental freedoms. A profound belief in the equality and dignity of every woman and man. A relentless engagement for dialogue and solidarity across all lines and divisions. Nelson Mandela was a great statesman, a fierce advocate for equality, the founding father of peace in South Africa.
In times of turbulence, Nelson Mandela shows us the power of resisting oppression, of justice over inequality, of dignity over humiliation, of forgiveness over hatred. As the world takes forward the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and strives to overcome new sources of adversity, let us recall the lessons of Nelson Mandela’s life, and the essential humanism that guided him: “For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”
A UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador and 1991 Laureate of the Houphouët-Boigny Peace Prize, Nelson Mandela’s legacy resonates with the mission of UNESCO, to empower all women and men on the basis of their equal rights and dignity, to promote dialogue and solidarity for justice and lasting peace.

This action, this spirit has never been so important at this time when we see division and polarity all over the world. We think that Nelson Mandela would approve of the ValuesJam ambition to create harmony all over the world by inspiring one million values-led conversations. In another connection, he also said “Music is a great blessing. It has the power to elevate and liberate us. It sets people free to dream. It can unite us to sing with one voice.”

MaryBeth Hyland
MaryBeth Highland is ValuesJammer VJ000058 and has adopted the FRIENDSHIP card.
Who are you?
I’m a values-driven, conscious leader who is on a personal mission to create spaces where voices are heard stories are released and purpose is ignited. I create that possibility through the writing in my book, Permission to Be Human, keynotes, retreats, coaching, courses and workshops.
After years of surviving as a clinically diagnosed, “work addict” who had no tools to support my sense of well-being, I finally went on a values-based mindfulness healing journey. Today I’m about to welcome my new 200-square-foot tiny home on my family’s 100-acre ranch in Idaho. It’s off the grid with no cell or internet reception and I can’t wait to feel an even greater shift in living in alignment with my highest core value, Unity with Nature.
On a legit quest to become a cowgirl, I’m most looking forward to working the range with my soul sister and embarking on an equine therapy apprenticeship this fall. I’m so grateful to be a part of this community that is a living example of the importance to share the possibility of truly embodying your values in life.

Why did you join the ValuesJam community?
I connected with Alan through World Values Day and the US Values Alliance and he was such a great champion for the need for my awareness and engagement with our core values that I knew I wanted to support him and check out his offering.
How are you using your ValuesJam card decks?
I gifted them to people who had expressed interest in being more intentional with daily practices around their value activation.
Fave rock n roll moment of magic from a ValuesJam session
I haven’t yet had the pleasure of attending, but having gotten to know Alan personally and professionally. My favorite jam sessions with him 1×1 have been around connecting to one another at a deeper level through our authentic values and that being the baseline for wanting to elevate consciousness on the planet through that becoming normalized.
How could more FRIENDSHIP improve the world?
True friendship comes when there is mutual respect, trust, love, and compassion for one another. If more humans were activating friendship in their lives, we’d feel less alone, create more potential, and ignite a revolution that’s grounded in love and not fear. More often than not, suffering occurs when we feel like the only one going through our pain and that we have no one to share it with. When in reality, we all get to heal and come closer together in our human experience when we learn to seek out like-hearted communities and individuals where everyone is better off by sharing that experience authentically. And even more importantly, we can elevate the consciousness of the planet if we learned how to befriend ourselves! Giving unconditional permission to be human instead of expecting nothing but perfection.
What drew you to adopt the ValuesJam card FRIENDSHIP
True friendship is when I get to activate ANY (and ideally all) of my core values with another soul who gets lit up by them too. It’s probably why I feel so close to my horseback riding and cowgirl sisters – whenever we ride, we’re lighting up on all those values cylinders and it’s a divine experience to take in. I wish for every person in this world to get to experience that with their own core values and know that even if some people don’t “get you” there are plenty of others in another pasture who do. This life is meant to be shared in friendship.
