WHAT IS WORLD VALUES DAY?
World Values Day is an annual campaign to increase the awareness and practice of values around the world.
Values are what matter most to us. They motivate and guide us. They are the passion in our hearts, the reason we do the things we do.
In a world that can feel increasingly divided, values help unite us. They are the glue holding together our communities and wider society.
The theme this year is Values for Community. So on World Values Day let’s put our values into action, reaching across the growing barriers that divide us to build stronger communities and a more united world. Celebrations take place from 1-31 October and ValuesJam is a great way to be involved with values-led conversations in your community.

Laura Elmquist
We believe that the value of BELONGING is closely related to this year’s World Values Day theme of COMMUNITY Laura Elmquist is ValuesJammer VJ000030 and has adopted the BELONGING card
Who are you?
My name is Laura Elmquist. I was born and raised in New Mexico in a small village called Tortugas. I am a member of the Ysleta Tigua Indian tribe. I am a wife, and mother to our daughter, Anelise and our dog, Cooper. I love hiking and long walks in nature, photography, art, music and books (and lots of other things too)! I love learning and trying new things. I love my community!
What are your core values?
My core values are: Belonging, Gratitude, Humility, Appreciation for Nature, and Learning.
Why did you join the ValuesJam community?
I joined the ValuesJam community because values are important to me in my work, with my family and serve as a light and guide for how I live and interact with those in my sphere. ValuesJam provides me an opportunity to explore different values with others across the globe!
How are you using your ValuesJam card decks?
- I am using them in my organization as a way to engage my colleagues to explore their own values. In my organization we have a values committee and I feel it’s important to keep these conversations going regularly so that values are always at the heart of what we do.
- I am sharing them with my daughter’s teachers, so that they can help students to explore values, because it is never too early!
- I have used them as a fun activity while gathering with friends and family.
Fave rock n roll moment of magic from a ValuesJam session?
My fave rock n roll moment was when we did a ValuesJam session in our quarterly staff meeting with 125 people all talking about the value of Leadership. I didn’t think we could pull it off so smoothly and the best part is how eager everyone was to contribute their thoughts!
How could more BELONGING improve the world?
Belonging is a basic human need. When we know that we belong; we can be our authentic selves, we are our best, healthiest selves and therefore create environments where others can be the same. We are accepting of others and empathetic. Belonging fosters love, respect and mutual care, which our world needs more of!
What drew you to adopt the ValuesJam card BELONGING?
The Belonging ValuesJam card is near and dear to my heart, as a mother. Our children are our future and its so important for them to have a solid foundation which starts with belonging, so they can be healthy successful adults. Also, I am the Culture, Equity and Belonging Champion at Aprendamos. Creating a culture of Belonging at our organization and for my colleagues is at the heart of my work and I love it!!
